João é natural de Lisboa (1957) e viveu no concelho de Cascais até se mudar para o Algarve há 30 anos. Vive e tem atelier há 7 anos em Boliqueime.

Começou a pintar em 1975. Frequentou durante algum tempo um curso de desenho e pintura no ARCO, em Lisboa. Além de algumas exposições coletivas na área de Lisboa/Cascais, passou em 1988 uns largos meses na Suíça onde fez várias exposições individuais (Chateau d’ Alaman, Credit Suisse de Lausanne, Centro de Congressos de Montreux, Espace Imbach de Sion…) e ficaram muitos dos quadros a óleo de um período surrealista. Passa, entretanto a trabalhar com acrílico e em abordagens mais abstratas. Tem pintado sempre, ao longo da vida. Em Novembro de 1995 expõe no Centro Cultural de Belém (individual). Em 1996 passa dois meses e meio em Nova Iorque a visitar museus e galerias – e a pintar à noite. A atração do grande mercado é enorme e bons contactos aí estabelecidos são tentadores mas a necessidade de se manter por cá dita as regras. Com família recém formada e participação num negócio de praia sazonal, opta por ir, ao longo dos anos, pintando, evoluindo, encontrando o seu próprio caminho.

Apesar das poucas exposições feitas nos últimos 20 anos tem quadros espalhados por colecionadores de norte a sul do país. Destaca-se, entre outros, o Instituto de Implantologia, em Lisboa.

Nos seus trabalhos aborda sobretudo a composição livre. O fascínio de fazer, descobrir e contrapor. A mancha, o traço, a cor. O confronto em equilíbrio. Uma ou outra figuração, aqui e ali, para depois de novo partir para a composição livre. Como um compositor musical que dispõe dos sons, acordes, silêncios, ritmos, harmonia… expressão.
João was born in Lisbon in 1957 and lived in Cascais until 20 years ago when he moved to the Algarve. He now lives and has his studio in Boliqueime.

He started painting in 1975 and studied drawing and painting at ARCO in Lisbon. While living in Cascais he took part in several collective exhibitions in the Lisbon/Cascais área. In 1988 he spent nine months in Switzerland and exhibited individually at the Château d’Allaman, Credit Suisse in Lausanne, Montreux Music & Convention Centre and Espace Imbach in Sion. Many of his oil paintings from this surrealist period are still to be found in the country. Meanwhile he embraced acrylic paints and further approached abstraction. In 1995 João Mota Gomes held another individual exhibition at Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. The following year he spent a twelve-week period in New York City mostly visiting museums and art galleries during the day and painting in the evenings and at night. He fully sensed the attraction towards such a market and established quite a few connexions seriously considering extending his stay in NY but finally opting otherwise. He has never stopped painting and has evolved steadily through the years finding and marking his own path.

Since moving to the Algarve he has exhibited less but nevertheless collectors throughout Portugal have continuously acquired his works. Among others, the Institute of Implantology of Lisbon stands out.

As always, he mainly explores free composition. The fascination of doing and discovering. Stain, blob, line, colour. A balanced clash. A hint of figures then again free composition. As a composer using sounds, chords and rests, building harmony… expression.
